What is UNGM?

UNGM (United Nations Global Marketplace) is the central procurement portal for the United Nations system. It aggregates tender opportunities from UN agencies, funds, and programmes worldwide, representing billions of dollars in annual procurement.

If you want to supply to the UN, UNGM is the starting point. It's where agencies publish opportunities and where suppliers register to be considered for UN contracts.

Who runs it?

UNGM is managed by the UN Secretariat's Procurement Division, with participation from across the UN system. Over 40 UN organisations use the platform, including:

  • UNDP (UN Development Programme)
  • UNICEF (Children's Fund)
  • WHO (World Health Organization)
  • WFP (World Food Programme)
  • UNHCR (Refugee Agency)
  • UN Secretariat and peacekeeping operations

Each agency maintains some procurement autonomy, but UNGM provides unified visibility.

What contracts are published?

UN procurement spans virtually every category:

  • Goods: Vehicles, medical supplies, IT equipment, food, shelter materials
  • Services: Consulting, logistics, security, training, IT services
  • Works: Construction, infrastructure, camp facilities

Opportunities range from small local contracts to massive global tenders. The UN system procures over $20 billion annually.

Registration requirements

To bid on UN contracts, you must register on UNGM. Registration involves:

  • Creating a company profile
  • Selecting relevant UN commodity codes (UNSPSC)
  • Providing company documentation
  • Choosing Basic or higher registration levels

Registration is free at Basic level. Higher levels (1, 2) involve more documentation but unlock more opportunities and provide visibility to procurement officers searching for suppliers.

How UN procurement works

UN procurement follows specific rules distinct from national government procurement:

  • Best value: Not always lowest price; quality and reliability matter
  • Global competition: Open to suppliers worldwide (some developing country preferences)
  • Long-term agreements: Many agencies use standing arrangements for common goods
  • Emergency procurement: Expedited processes for humanitarian response

Understanding each agency's specific processes is important. UNDP, UNICEF, and WFP each have nuances in their procurement approaches.

Strengths

  • Unified UN access: Single portal for 40+ organisations
  • Global opportunities: Contracts in virtually every country
  • Supplier registration: Visibility to procurement officers
  • Transparent: Award information published
  • Free registration: Basic access costs nothing

Limitations

  • Complex navigation: Multiple UN agencies with different processes can be confusing
  • Registration levels: Full visibility requires higher registration tiers
  • Search functionality: Finding relevant opportunities requires familiarity with UNSPSC codes
  • Not all UN agencies: Some organisations publish elsewhere (World Bank, regional development banks)
  • Document access: Some tender documents require registration to download
