The Contract involves the provision of Archaeological Consultancy Stage Services (Stages i - iv) for the Athlone Flood Alleviation Scheme (AFAS).
Westmeath County Council in partnership with The Office of Public Works (OPW), have commissioned the AFAS to address flooding in Athlone town with the objective of the works to implement a flood alleviation scheme that will ensure that properties and people are protected insofar as possible from the effects of flooding from the River Shannon and its tributaries.
The Option Appraisal Report undertaken as part of the Shannon Catchment Flood Risk Assessment and Management (CFRAM) Study identified eight (8) discrete cells requiring flood defence works, namely:
Flood Cell 1 - Deerpark
Flood Cell 2 - The Strand
Flood Cell 3 - The Quay
Flood Cell 4 - Brick Island
Flood Cell 5 - Marine View
Flood Cell 6 - Iona Park
Flood Cell 7 - River Al (Creggan)
Flood Cell 8 - Golden Island
The Contract for Archaeological Consultancy Stage Services shall comprise of Stage (I) - (iv) Services.
