DANTE (Delivery of Advanced Network Technology to Europe) plans, builds and operates advanced networks for research and education, including the pan-European network known as GÉANT and is Co-ordinating partner for the ORIENTplus project.
The ORIENTplus project provides high speed direct connectivity between European NRENs and those in China to foster EU/China collaborative scientific and other user applications.
The national research and education networks (NRENs) of Europe and China have jointly funded, dedicated point to point connectivity via direct terrestrial fibre optic cables since 2007. This links the pan-European GÉANT network and the Chinese networks CERNET and CSTNET, enabling scientific and academic collaborations between their research and education communities.
The current contract for EU/China connectivity provides 10 Gbps capacity until December 2014, through a project called ORIENTplus, which is funded by the NRENs, the European Commission's FP7 programme and the Chinese government. Previous connectivity contracts and their funding have alternated between the European and Chinese sides.
A project to renew this connectivity has been established and the EU and Chinese project partners are tendering together to maintain (or increase) the capacity of the connectivity between them, over a multi year term (as stated within the respective Lots). Subject to affordability, the objective of the procurement is to achieve a long term option with an element of future proofing in terms of optional potential bandwidth increases of up to 100 Gbps over the resultant contract term.
While DANTE is conducting this procurement exercise, it is being undertaken in co-operation with CERNET (via Tsinghua University — CERNET Center) and CSTNET, and it is intended that any contract awarded as a result of this tender may be with DANTE or Tsinghua University or both with novation options to any of the parties listed above.
This open tender opportunity replaces the previous contract notice published under this requirement (2014/S 126-224847).
