The Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investment (DETI) developed a Strategic Energy Framework (SEF) which was agreed by the Northern Ireland Executive in September 2010 and sets out a target to increase the amount of electricity consumption from renewable sources to 40% by 2020. The SEF anticipates that the 40% target will be met by a variety of technologies, both on and offshore while recognising that meeting this target will also have implications on the electricity grid in Northern Ireland, necessitating some level of reinforcement.
In recognition of this, DETI has developed a draft Onshore Renewable Electricity Action Plan (OREAP) which was subject to the Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) process. The draft OREAP and associated Environmental Report has been issued for public consultation for a period of 12 weeks, ending on the 20 January 2012.
DETI now requires a Contractor to complete an Appropriate Assessment of the OREAP.
