The Archaeological Survey of Ireland (ASI) is part of the National Monuments Service, Department of Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs. It is at present engaged in a descriptive survey of the archaeological monuments of the State. This information is stored in the Sites and Monuments Record (SMR) and is made available digitally through the Historic Environment Viewer on the National Monuments Service website www.archaeology.ie and in hard copy in the National Monuments Service Archive Unit, Room G62, Custom House, Dublin 1. The information also serves in updating the statutory Record of Monuments and Places (RMP). The SMR, the website and the RMP are essential tools in the protection of the archaeological heritage of the State. See RFT for further details.
